about the ASX - The Australian Securities Exchange (formerly known as Australian Stock Exchange) dates back as far as 1861 in Sydney and was then followed by 6 separate state based exchanges beginning to form in the other capital cities. The ASX was not officially formed until 1987 when the exchanges merged and became completely electronic with the newly established SEATS (Stock Exchange Automated Trading System). In an interesting move, in 1998, the ASX listed on itself which then allowed the public to buy shares in the ASX, on the ASX. Because the ASX cannot regulate itself, as it does with other ASX traded stocks, ASX Limited is regulated by ASIC (Australian Securities and Investments Commission).
